WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman Olivia Struckman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) netted the game's lone goal – her first as a member of MIT's women's soccer team at 12:20 in the opening session that provided the Engineers with a 1-0 non-conference season opening victory against Brandeis University on Friday evening.
MIT has faced Brandeis in their season opener in 11 of the past 12 years, and Friday's victory marked the first time the Engineers defeated the Judges since 2010.
Struckman provided the visitor's with the lead for good by burying a shot into the top right corner following a Brandeis defensive turnover outside the box. MIT had a chance to double its lead 30 seconds later with Struckman's third shot of the contest, but her attempt sailed wide left.
Brandeis tried to even the score with three consecutive shots, but were denied by the Engineers defense and sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Ullmann (Princeton, N.J). MIT held the Judges to just one shot in the second half.
MIT outshot Brandeis, 9-5, but both teams finished with two shots on goal. Struckman and senior co-captain Ambika Krishnamachar (Darien, Conn.) each recorded four shots, while sophomore Kathleen Chen (Chappaqua, N.Y.) registered her only attempt at 53:20 in the second stanza. Ullman turned away two shots, one in each half.
Tech will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they welcome RPI to Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
