Cambridge, Mass. (November 21) – MIT senior forward Olivia Struckman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) has been selected to participate and represent the Engineers at the 2017 New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) Senior Bowl, while will be held at Merrimack College on Sunday, December 3 at 2:00 p.m.
Struckman is the 21st member of the women's soccer team in program history to be named to the NEWISA Senior Bowl. Not only was Struckman selected to compete, she was the leading vote getter among the 21 student-athletes who were chosen for the game. The senior was also one of eight forwards to be picked as she will be joined by Brie Voight from Elms College, Chandler Stier from Gordon College, Leah Hibbad from Husson University, Sara Sanau Ruiz from Mount Holyoke College, Jaycie Triandafilou from New England College, Kim Quiles from Springfield College and Sophie Gomarlo from WPI in that category.
In 23 games this year with the Engineers, Struckman registered a career-high 14 goals and a career-high 31 points to go along with three assists. Struckman, who was named as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Athlete of the Year for the second straight season, ended her career with 37 goals, 21 assists and 95 points. In the record book, she will close her career ranked fifth in all-time assists and points as well as sixth in goals.
Struckman, who became the first student-athlete to reach 30 points in a single season for the Engineers since 2012, helped MIT break seven team records including win percentage, most wins, longest win streak, most wins to start a season, goals, assists and points. Additionally, the senior helped the Engineers claim their first NEWMAC Championship title since 2011 and aided MIT in reaching the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in five seasons.
The senior captain guided MIT to its best season in program history in back-to-back seasons and was part of a class that registered the most wins for a senior class. In four years with MIT, Struckman and the senior class tallied a record of 63-19-7 for a winning percentage of .747.
