SALEM, Mass. - The Salem State College women's soccer team received a goal from junior forward Vanessa Lima in the 67th minute en route to a 1-0 non-conference victory at Alumni Field over the MIT (3-2).
The Lady Vikings (3-1) paid tribute to Carrie Holmstrom, a senior soccer player from Dartmouth High School who was seriously injured in a car accident on April 28, by donating the proceeds of the gate admission to the Kicks 4 Carrie Fund and the Shriner's Burn Hospital of Boston, where Carrie is currently going through rehabilitation. Holmstrom attended the match and was involved in coin toss when she was wheeled by her father to midfield. Proceeds raised from the match totalled $1500.
Lima netted the game-winner after busting between two defenders and beating MIT senior goalkeeper Kat Vater with a shot just inside the far post. It was Lima's second goal of the season. Salem State's junior goalkeeper Abigail DeAngelo made six saves while Vater stopped eight shots in a losing effort for the Engineers. SSC held a 13-10 edge in shots at goal.
