SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - MIT's Amy Ludlum had a hand in all five goals, recording a hat trick and two assists to lead the Engineers over host Mount Holyoke in Saturday's NEWMAC opener. Ludlum tied an Institute record with eight points on the day, equaliing the mark set by Rebecca Hill during the 1993 season.
The Engineers (5-3, 1-0) got on the board early as first-year Liz Theurer placed a cross from Ludlum into the open net just over three minutes into regulation. This was Theurer's fifth goal of the season and the eventual game-winner. The Lyons (1-4, 0-1) were able to prevent any further scoring for the remainder of the half, but MIT exploded for four more goals in the second period to secure the win.
Ludlum netted three goals within the first 12 minutes of the half, increasing her season total to five, and earned her second assist of the game on a feed to Ashleigh Leonard for the final MIT goal.
Mount Holyoke's goalkeeper Ashley DeFlumere posted six saves between the pipes and drops to 0-2 on the season. MIT's Kat Vater turned aside four shots to even her record at 3-3 and gain her third shutout in six games.
Mount Holyoke will continue its four-game home stand on Tuesday, Sept. 26 with a non-conference game versus Bay Path at 4:00 p.m. MIT will host Emerson on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 4:00 p.m.
