BABSON PARK, Mass. - Freshman Kirsten Schmid scored the game-winning goal with 1:57 remaining in the first half as the Babson College women's soccer team opened its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) schedule with a 1-0 victory over visiting MIT on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Beavers improve to 6-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the NEWMAC, while the Engineers fall to 2-6-0 overall and 0-1-0 in league play.

MIT nearly took the lead just nine minutes into the contest, as sophomore Amy Ludlum got past the defense and broke free down the middle of the field. However, Babson senior goalie Marci McCormack came charging out of net and caught Ludlum's shot attempt to keep the Engineers off the board. That would prove to be MIT's best scoring chance of the afternoon, as the visitors managed just four shots on goal and six overall in the contest.

Firing 13 of its 16 shots in the first half, Babson finally got on the board in the final two minutes of the period. Schmid collected a loose ball just outside the 18 and tucked a sliding shot underneath charging goalkeeper Kat Vater for her fourth goal of the season at 33:03, giving the Beavers a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish. McCormack continued to keep the Engineers at bay in the second half, finishing with four saves in earning her fifth shutout of the year.
