Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Smith women's soccer moved to 6-3-1 overall and 3-1 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) after defeating MIT (3-8-0, 1-3-0), 2-0, at Steinbrenner Satdium, Friday afternoon. Catherine Peo led the offensive charge, firing six shots on goal, including the game-winner in the seventh minute.

Peo's unassisted opening score was from about 15 yards out. Smith's captain and starting midfielder fired the shot from the right side, although the ball carried to the other end of the net where it just snuck past the outstretched arms of MIT netminder, Kat Vater.

It didn't take long for the Pioneers to add to their lead as Estafi Alvarez took a pass from rookie Brittoni Famous in the middle of the box and slid a fast-moving grounder into the bottom left-hand corner in the 12th minute. Although Smith generated a few other opportunities, MIT was able to contain the Pioneer offense for the rest of the tilt.

The Engineers had a tough time generating space in the midfield, which enabled Smith to keep possession in Tech's zone for most of the match. Meghan O'Kane served up MIT's best chance in the 75th minute with a header from 12 yards out.

Kat Vater made eight saves in defeat, although Tech's All-Conference keeper surrendered two goals on Smith's first three shots. Lauren Bachtel started in net for Smith and made two saves in 58 minutes of action. Marlowe Diekmann took over the reigns the rest of the way, making one save en route to the team shutout.
