CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Junior Ashley Maiorano scored on a rebound to provide the only offensive sparks in a 1-0 victory for WPI (5-8-1, 2-4-0) against MIT (4-10-0, 2-5-0) in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women's soccer match, Tuesday afternoon. Tech net minder Kat Vater made the initial save on a shot fired by Mary Desrosiers in the 10th minute, but Maiorano put back the rebound to lift WPI to a crucial league win.
The loss was especially disheartening for the MIT faithful, who showed unwavering support as the Cardinal and Gray celebrated its Senior Day. After being dominated in the first 10 minutes, including the game-winning score, MIT played decisively better the rest of the way. But MIT's version of the Engineers was unable to respond with the equalizer as senior Manda Otterman looked sharp between the posts. Otterman made six stops in the second half and finished with eight saves for the game. Vater stopped six shots after surrendering the lone goal early in the tilt.
MIT had multiple scoring chances to pull even in the second half, including a door-stop save by Otterman against Amy Ludlum in the 60th minute. Several minutes later, Ludlum fed a beautiful ball through the middle, but senior Meghan O'Kane pushed the scoring chance just wide. Ludlum closed with a game-high five shots on goal. Although MIT upped the intensity in the final 10 minutes, neither team was able to generate a clean scoring chance as WPI took over sole possession of seventh place in the NEWMAC standings.
Last season, WPI and MIT battled to a 0-0 draw in Worcester.
