Golden Goal Lifts Springfield Over MIT, 2-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Springfield College junior midfielder Meghan Mertzic scored two goals including a golden goal in overtime as the Pride defeated MIT, 2-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday on Brock Affleck Field in Springfield.
The Pride (10-4-2, 7-1) and Engineers (4-11, 2-6) played evenly in the first half, although neither team could muster a goal as the period ended 0-0. In the second half, Mertzic scored her first goal of the contest in the 54th minute. The goal was assisted by senior midfielders Sarah Killeen and Amanda Nealon. Facing certain defeat, MIT evened the game with just 15 seconds left in regulation on an unassisted goal by senior Meghan O'Kane.
Just 1:49 into the first overtime period, Mertzic gave the Pride the 2-1 victory as her unassisted effort found the back of the net. It was SC's seventh consecutive victory and kept the Pride undefeated in the month of October.
Pride sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Petri recorded two saves in the victory while Engineer goalkeeper Kat Vater made eight stops against the Springfield attack.
