Wellesley Ends MIT's Season, 1-0
Oct. 27, 2005
WELLESLEY, Mass. - Senior captain Jennifer Marcello scored the lone goal on Wellesley's senior day to lead the Blue past MIT, 1-0. The victory moves Wellesley (7-6-2, 4-4-1) into fifth place in the NEWMAC standings, while Tech's fourth consecutive one-goal loss puts an end to the 2005 season as the Engineers (4-13-0, 2-7-0) finish ninth in the league race.
Marcello earned the recognition she received prior to Thursday's tilt by scoring in the 27th minute off a feed from Kathleen McCarthy. Marcello dominated play in the middle, firing four more shots toward the MIT goal during the match. In a theme that unfortunately was all too familiar for the Cardinal and Gray this season, Tech was unable to control possession or generate a midfield attack and was outshot, 10-4.
Kat Vater made nine saves on the afternoon and finished the regular season with a career-high 149 stops. Amy Ludlum, who took credit for two of MIT's four shots against Wellesley, closed her second season as the team's leading scorer with eight goals and 16 points. Statistically, MIT endured its worst campaign since it last failed to make the postseason in 1988. The Engineers tied that squad for the fewest number of goals scored in a season (10) which led to nine heartbreaking 1-0 defeats.
