MIT Shuts Out Clark in Regular-Season Finale
Oct. 29, 2008
WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman Alisha Lussiez notched her third game-winning goal of the season in the 69th minute on Tuesday night as the Engineers posted a 1-0 victory over Clark University in the rain at Granger Field. The result, which secured MIT's third straight winning season in conference play, impacted the seedings for the upcoming New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Tournament.
With the win, MIT (6-8-2, 4-3-2) clinched the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 Wellesley College on Saturday, November 1 (TBA). Clark (7-9, 4-5 NEWMAC), which enters as the No. 6 seed, will head to No. 3 Babson College on that same day (TBA).
Lussiez converted the game-winner when she dangled around a pair of Cougar defenders and used a hard shot to beat keeper Joanna Clark for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Clark missed an opportunity to knot the score after catching MIT goalkeeper Stephanie Brenman out of position with less than 10 minutes remaining. Freshman defender Rachel Minsky corralled a loose ball in front of the goal, but her bid was cleared by the MIT defense before it crossed the goal line.
The Cougars, who outshot MIT 14-4, had several more opportunities to get on the board in the waning minutes. Junior Charlotte Bowmans’ shot sailed just over the cross bar in the 84th minute and a drive by junior Lauren King floated high with just over two minutes remaining. Clark also held a strong advantage in corner kicks (9-3), but could not break through.
Clark made two saves in goal for the hosts while Brenman stopped four shots for MIT.
