Softball Drops Two to Coast Guard
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Ellie Fodor (Trenton, Mich.) hit her first career home run, but MIT was not able to overcome an early deficit falling, 7-4, to the Coast Guard Academy (18-12) in game one of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers also dropped the nightcap, 12-1, to the two-time defending league champs to fall to 7-18 overall and 3-7 in league play.
With a pair of wins on Saturday, Coast Guard senior start Hayley Feindel (River Ridge, La.) moved into third place on the all-time NCAA Division III wins list, with 114 career victories.
In the opener, junior Stacia Sarwinski's (Grove, Okla.) three-run homer highlighted a five-run fifth inning as the Bears took a 7-0 lead. The Bears opened the scoring in the third on an RBI double by Jesse Richardson (Kent, Wash.) and an RBI single by junior Holli Bastinck () before scoring five times in the fifth.
In the fifth, freshman Chloe Harmon (Escondido, Calif.) had an RBI double and the Bears also scored a run on an error before Sarwinski's blast to right field her team-leading sixth of the season.
Ellie Fodor broke up the shutout with a three-run homer to right in the sixth before junior Anna Christensen's (Vernon Hills, Ill.) RBI ground out in the seventh scoring senior Jessica Iacobucci (Phoenixville, Pa.), who led off with a single, closed the scoring.
Feindel (10-6) went the distance to get the win in the game one allowing eight hits and four runs, three earned while walking one and striking out 12.
Fodor (4-7) took the loss for MIT as she went 4 1/3 innings allowing nine hits and seven runs, six earned with one walk and three strikeouts. Fodor had earned complete-game shutouts in each of her past two starts coming into Saturday, striking out a combined 22 batters over her previous two outings.
Richardson was 3 for 3 with a double and two runs scored while sophomore Kaitlin Ward (Saline, Mich.) had two hits in the game one win.
Iacobucci and Christensen each had two hits for the Engineers in the opener.
In game two, sophomore Devin Fellman (New Port Richey, Fla.) led off the bottom of the first with her first of two homers in game and the Bears added a pair of runs as Richardson and Bastinck, who both singled came around on wild pitches for a 3-0 lead.
MIT got its run in the second, an unearned run as freshman Karly McLaughlin (Edwardsville, Ill.) led off with a single, was bunted to second and scored on an outfield error following a single by Fodor.
The Bears put the game out of reach with seven runs in the third inning. Bastinck and Harmon had RBI singles before sophomore Kaitlin Ward's RBI double. Fellman hit a two-run shot to left field as the Bears took a 10-1 lead.
Feindel (11-6) allowed four hits and the unearned run while not walking a batter and striking out eight to get the win.
Iacobucci (2-9) worked the first two innings and allowed five hits and five earned runs to take the loss.
MIT will host Smith College for a pair of NEWMAC games on Tuesday, April 17. The doubleheader begins at 3:00 p.m. at Briggs Field on Tuesday.
