MIT Softball Falls to Wellesley College in NEWMAC Action

WELLESLEY, Mass. – At its first away games of the season against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Wellesley College, the MIT softball team fell to the Blue with a score of 4-1 in the first game and 5-1 in the second. The Engineers are now 11-6 for the season and 2-2 in NEWMAC action, while Wellesley is now 12-6 for the season and 4-2 in conference play.

In the first game, senior Leah Alpert (Holliston, Mass.) scored MIT's only run at the top of the second inning off a single by sophomore K.K. Wopat (Edwardsville, Ill.), giving the Cardinal and Gray an early lead. The lead, however, did not last, as Wellesley did some damage by scoring three back-to-back runs in the bottom of the second and another at the bottom of the fourth, officially taking the lead. With the Engineers unable to catch up, the game ended with a score of 4-1.

Alpert was 1-for-3 with one run, while Wopat was also 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Sophomore Ellie Fodor (Trenton, Mich.) was at the mound for the first two innings, allowing six hits and three runs, while striking out three. Freshman Alexandra Marshall (Glen Head, N.Y.) pitched the remaining four innings, allowing four hits and one run and striking out five.

At the top of the first inning of the second game, sophomore Sarah Van Belleghem (Los Gatos, Calif.) scored the first run of the game off a passed ball. With two Wellesley runs at the bottom of the second, three more at the bottom of the fourth and a home run in the sixth, MIT trailed, 6-1 for the remainder of the game.

Van Belleghem was 2-for-3 with one run, while Fodor was 2-for-2. Marshall pitched all six innings, allowing nine hits and six runs and striking out three. She is now 4-3 at the mound.

MIT wastes no time between games, hosting another NEWMAC foe, Wheaton College, on Saturday, April 6 at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.
