MIT Defeats Regis, 6-2
March 30, 2005
CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - The MIT softball team recorded a 6-2 win over Regis College in its home-opener on Wednesday. Originally scheduled as away game, the rain from earlier in the week resulted in a change in venue. Carly Saylor almost hit for the cycle, tallying a single, double, and a triple. The Engineers improve to 3-6 on the year while the Pride drops to 4-6.
Tech's Adrianne Hee led off with a walk and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Amanda Poteet hit a sacrifice bunt which moved Hee to third. Cheryl Texin blasted a triple to right field, bringing Hee home. A RBI single by Saylor was followed by a single from Leah Bogsted. MIT posted two consecutive outs, ending the inning with a 2-0 advantage.
Both sides had 1-2-3 innings in their next at-bats. In the bottom of the second, Melissa O'Donnell hit a lead-off single for Regis. Blair Benander reached on an error as O'Donnell advanced to third. Benander then stole second base. Courtney Coles tallied a single which scored O'Donnell. After a foul-out and a strikeout, Nicole Mesurri kept the pressure on by reaching on an error that scored Benander. The Pride loaded the bases as a result of another MIT error. The Engineers got out of the inning with a force-out at home.
The game remained tied at 2-2 until the top of the fifth, when MIT took a three-run lead. Poteet got the rally going with a triple to center field. Texin was walked and then stole second. Saylor cleared the bases with a triple. Batya Fellman's ground out to first base allowed Saylor to score.
The Engineers tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh inning. Saylor reached on an error and then scored on Bogsted's double. Fellman contributed a single, but the rest of the side went down in order.
Hurler Leah Bogsted earned the win for MIT, as she fanned 11 batters. Veronica Coles totaled seven strikeouts for the Pride.
The next game for MIT will be on Friday, April 1 when it travels to NEWMAC foe Wheaton College.
