Babson Takes Two from MIT
April 9, 2008
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Jess Bryn struck out nine in a complete first-game effort and Jess Cohen went 3-for-3 with two RBI as Babson College began a doubleheader sweep with a 7-1 win over MIT at Briggs Field on Wednesday. The Beavers, who took the second game, 3-1, improved their season ledger to 17-11 and 6-2 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play. The Engineers fell to 4-17 and 1-9 in conference action.
In the first game, Babson built on an early 3-0 lead by exploding for three more in the fifth inning. Cohen blasted a one-out triple to left center that scored Courtney Thurston, who singled and stole second. Jess Winer doubled to right center, scoring Cohen. An error accounted for the third run.
The Engineers countered with one in the bottom half of the frame. With one out, Holly Jeffrey singled up the middle, before Leah Bogsted doubled down the left field line. With runners on second and third, Kaitlyn McCartney singled down the right field line, scoring Jeffrey and advancing Bogsted to third. But Bryn struck out the next two hitters to end the rally.
Bryn improved her personal mark to 10-5. She allowed only five hits, while walking one.
Leah Bogsted surrendered only six hits for MIT, but four Cardinal and Gray errors didn't help her cause. The senior fell to 3-8.
The second game saw Babson scattered three runs among three innings to get the job done. The only earned run came on Bryn's RBI triple in the third. The Engineers scored their run in the third on a Jeffrey groundout.
Jessica Oleinik went 2-for-3 for MIT. She was also the tough-luck loser on the hill, allowing only five hits. However, the Engineers again unraveled a bit with three miscues.
Danielle Liska got the win for Babson, surrendering four hits, while striking out six and walking none in six innings of work. She improved to 5-4. Bryn picked up her first save, striking out the side in the seventh.
