Women's Swimming and Diving Downs the Jumbos

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – On Saturday, the MIT women’s swimming and diving team traveled to Medford, Mass., to face off against the Jumbos of Tufts University in a non-conference dual meet. The nationally-ranked Engineers successfully defended their reputation as one of the best teams in the region, securing a 172.5-127.5 win.

In the first individual event, Tufts sophomore Katie Russell picked up the first of the Jumbos’ five wins with her swim in the 1000 Free (10:58.99). MIT freshman Hailey Kopp took second in the race with a career-best time (11:04.12).

Sophomore Sydney Giblin and freshman Elina Hu posted the Cardinal and Gray’s only 1-2 finish of the meet in the 200 IM. Giblin swam a season-best (2:17.69) and was closely followed by Hu (2:19.36).

MIT sophomore Emily Pitts had also had two season-best swims with her times in the 200 IM (2:23.64) and 200 Fly (2:34.03).

In addition, freshman Anna Kokensparger and junior Amy Jacobi each had four victories on the day, including their combined winning efforts in the 400 Medley Relay (4:08.21) and 200 Free Relay (1:40.37).

On Sunday, January 24, Tufts (2-5) travels across town to face perennial rival Boston College. On January 30, the No. 6 Engineers (8-0) will host the No. 5 Lord Jeffs of Amherst College.
