BOSTON, Mass. – Three-time defending champion MIT was a unanimous selection atop the 2013 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's swimming and diving preseason poll that was voted on by coaches in the league. The Engineers received all 10 first-place votes in the poll that was released on Thursday afternoon. Springfield College, who has been the runner-up at the last three conference championships, appeared second in the poll, while Wellesley College was third.
At the 2013 NEWMAC Championships, host MIT took the lead from day one, finishing with 1,021 points, almost 100 more than it had scored the year before. Over that weekend, the Engineers came in first place in 13 different events. The Pride wrapped up the three-day meet in second with 740 points.
MIT ended its season at the NCAA Division III Championships, where it finished in eighth place, the highest it has ever placed at nationals in program history. Six individual swimmers and all five relays earned All-America nods for finishing in the top 16 in their respective events.
