MIT Women's Swimming and Diving Nationally Ranked
PHOENIX, Ariz. – MIT women's swimming and diving is ranked eighth among all Division III programs in the country in the most recent College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) that was released over the weekend. Defending champion Emory University is first and Denison University is second, while Washington University (Mo.) and NYU are ranked just ahead of the Engineers in sixth and seventh respectively.
Unlike last year, when teams were ranked just three times throughout the season, the CSCAA will be releasing polls on a monthly basis throughout the 2013-14 season. In 2012-13, Tech was ranked as high as fifth. At the 2013 national championships and for the second year in a row, the Engineers came in eighth place, their highest finish to date.
So far this season, MIT has been victorious at each of its meets. To wrap up the 2013 portion of the season, the Cardinal and Gray came in first place at the annual MIT Winter Invitational, finishing over 500 points ahead of second place-finishing Harvard , earning a total of 17 NCAA B Cuts and breaking two school records.
The following day, the 200-yard freestyle relay was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Relay of the Week. Composed of sophomore Lena Yang (East Stroudsburg, Pa.), freshman Veronika Jedryka (Arlington Heights, Ill.), junior Michelle Cunningham (Wayland, Mass.) and senior Christy Rogers (Bend, Ore.), the relay touched in first place with a time of 1:34.15. In addition, Jedryka was named the Swimmer of the Week for finishing the weekend with seven first place finishes and an MIT record in the 200-yard backstroke. Jedryka, who is currently third in the country in that event, was also tabbed the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Swimmer of the Week.
Tech will open the New Year at home, hosting Coast Guard at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11.
