BOSTON, Mass. – After a busy weekend in the pool, the MIT women's swimming and diving team received two NEWMAC weekly awards on Monday afternoon. The 200-yard medley relay, which was composed of senior Christy Rogers (Bend, Ore.) and sophomores Kristen Finney (Lake Orion, Mich.), Danielle Garside (Broomfield, Colo.) and Lena Yang (East Stroudsburg, Pa.), received Relay of the Week honors for its performance against Amherst College on Saturday. In addition to the relay, Yang was named Swimmer of the Week for her five victories over the weekend.
On Friday evening, Tech traveled to Williamstown, Mass. to face Williams College, falling to the Ephs by a score of 192-97, before hosting Amherst on Saturday and ending the day with a 158-129 victory. This is just the third time in program history that the Engineers have defeated the Lord Jeffs. Against Amherst, the 200 medley relay started the meet off right by finishing in first place with a time of 1:48.42, out-touching Amherst's A relay by less than three tenths of a second.
Against Williams on Friday, Yang led the Engineers with her first place finish in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.27, coming into the wall just one tenth of a second ahead of a Williams swimmer. She also came second in the 100-yard freestyle 53.41 and led off the winning 200-yard freestyle relay that touched in 1:38.42. At home the following day, she was part of the 200 medley relay that came first, won the 50 free in 24.33, the 100 free in 53.49 and led off the winning 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:35.70.
Next up for the Engineers will be the Wheaton Invitational, which will take place from Friday through Saturday, Feb. 7-8. The next time MIT will race after that will be at the NEWMAC Championships, set to take place from Thursday, Feb. 20 through Sunday, Feb. 23 at WPI.
