MIT To Have Seven Divers Compete At Regionals This Weekend
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (February 22) – After winning their ninth and seventh straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships, respectively last weekend, the MIT men's and women's swimming and diving teams will have seven student-athletes competing in this weekend's NCAA Division III Northeast-North Diving Regionals hosted by the Engineers inside the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool.

Freshmen Charleen Wang (Mountain View, Calif.) and Vivian Zhou (Palo Alto, Calif.) as well as sophomores Morgan Matranga (Moraga, Calif.) and Dolly Payne (Los Alamitos, Calif.) will represent the women's team, while freshman Sam Solomon (Rockville, Md.) and sophomores Elliot Forde (Everett, Wash.) and Jeremy Sands (Skokie, Ill.) will represent the men's team. For Matranga, Payne, Forde and Sands it will be their second straight year competing at regionals and all seven divers will be looking to duplicate what Matranga did last year and qualify for the upcoming NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships later in March.

In order to qualify for the regional, divers must either achieve the NCAA standard on the same board at least twice during the regular season or once at the conference championship on either board, which all seven Engineers accomplished this year.

At the NEWMAC Championship, Solomon smashed his own school records and came in first place on both boards with scores of 534.00 (1-meter) and 534.90 (3-meter). Solomon, Forde and Sands swept the top-3 spot in both disciplines contributing a total of 130 points towards MIT's team scores this weekend. Zhou paced the Engineers on both boards as she took second on the 3-meter board and third on the 1-meter board. She was followed by Matranga (third on 3-meter and fourth on 1-meter) as well as Payne (seventh on both boards).

The NCAA Division III Northeast-North Diving Regional gets underway on Friday, February 24 at 2:00 p.m. and continues on Saturday, February 27 at 12:00 p.m. from MIT. For more information click here: 2017 Northeast-North Diving Regional Homepage.
