Women’s Tennis Defeats Springfield, 7-2, in Season Opener

 

SPRINGFIELD, Mass - In the first match of its season, MIT women's tennis posted an impressive 7-2 victory over conference-rival Springfield College on Saturday. The match marks the first loss for the Pride's new head coach, Tim Losee.

MIT's pair of Anisa McCree and Alex Hall opened the match with a shutout over Amy Shaw and Kyla Walgren. The Engineers' jumped out to an early lead over the Pride, sweeping all three doubles matches.

In singles play, MIT's Leslie Hansen dominated Springfield's Shaw, dropping only a single game. In the No. 6 spot, Hillary Jenny trailed 1-4 in the first set before turning the momentum in a 4-6, 6-3 (10-2) victory over the Pride's Vanessa Senecal. McCree and Hall scored MIT's other individual wins; Springfield's two victories came at the hands of freshmen Sam Carney and Erin Woodbury.

Both teams will return to the courts next weekend (September 18-20) for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association New England Regional Championship hosted by MIT.
