Wellesley, Mass. – Freshmen doubles team Lauren Quisenberry and Julia Hsu won three matches this weekend to reach the quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association tournament at Babson College.
The pair defeated a team from Vassar College by an 8-1 score in their first pro-set. In the second round, the unranked Engineers pulled out a gutsy 8-6 win over the eighth seeded doubles team of Taylor French and Nancy Worley from Williams College.
Their quarterfinal draw was not an easier contest, as Hsu and Quisenberry faced Brittney Faber and Leah Kepping of Middlebury College. Faber and Kepping, the top ranked doubles team in the tournament, were able to escape with an 8-3 victory and eliminate MIT from the proceedings.
Each MIT woman also participated in the singles tournament at Babson. Julia Hsu was a winner in her first round contest, 6-2, 6-4 over Genevieve Aniello of Wesleyan before falling (4-6, 2-6) to 9th ranked Kellen Alberstone from Bowdoin College. Kathleen Elkins of Williams was able to defeat Quisenberry in her opening round contest by a score of 6-4, 7-5.
On the legs of their strong performance in the tournament, Quisenberry and Hsu have again been named the New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference doubles team of the week. This is the second week in a row that the Engineer's freshman tandem has been honored.
