South Hadley, Mass. – MIT's women's tennis team remained perfect in NEWMAC conference play this afternoon as the Engineers picked up a 6-3 win at Mount Holyoke College. The win improved MIT's record to 3-1, 3-0 in the NEWMAC, while Mount Holyoke fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the league.
MIT got off to a strong start in the doubles portion of the match. Freshmen Juana Becerra (Bucaramanga, Colombia) and Vynnie Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) got the Engineers on the board with their first point of the day, taking an 8-2 decision at No. 2. Sophomore Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn.) and freshman Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) scored the other doubles point for MIT, taking an 8-3 win over Nahrhee Han/AnnElizabeth Konkel at the No. 1 position.
Kong and Becerra got things rolling in singles play for MIT, winning their matches at No. 3 and No. 4 to take the first two singles points and clinch the match for the Engineers. Kong defeated Sarah Anischik 6-2, 6-1, while Becerra took her match by the same score over Eman Malik.
Playing for the first time at No. 1 this season, freshman Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) was victorious as she took a 7-5, 6-4 win over Han. Senior Hillary Jenny (Green Bay, Wis.) scored the other point for the Engineers at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kelsey Brower.
MIT continue NEWMAC play on Tuesday, Sept. 27 when it hosts Babson College at 4:00 p.m.
