Women’s Tennis Finishes NEWMAC Play With Win at Wheaton
NORTON, Mass. – MIT's women's tennis team finished off a fine NWMAC conference season today as the No. 22 Engineers took a 6-3 win at Wheaton College. MIT picked up key wins in all three doubles matches as it ran its record to 6-2 overall and 6-1 in the NEMAC. Wheaton saw its record slip to 7-3 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
MIT put in a strong effort in doubles play, which turned out to be a deciding factor in the outcome of the match. The Engineers' No. 1 duo of sophomores Lauren Quisenberry (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn.) took an 8-4 victory in their match as did the No. 3 team of seniors Alexandria Hall (Hemet, Calif.) and Hillary Jenny (Green Bay, Wis.). The doubles sweep was completed with the MIT No. 2 team of freshmen Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) and Vynnie Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) taking an 8-1 decision over Wheaton's Bell and Boggis.
In the split of the singles matches MIT picked up victories at Nos. 2, 4 and 5 to secure the win. Quisenberry cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Alexandra Marlowe in her match at No. 2, while Kong was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 4. Hall was also victorious in straight sets, getting a 6-1, 6-3 win over Sarah Crom at No. 5.
Wheaton picked up its first point of the day at the No. 1 position where Dutt fell to Lyndsay Cooke, 6-4, 6-0. The other two matches turned out to be the most closely contested of the match, with both going the Lyons way. Jenny, playing at No. 6, dropped a 7-5, 6-4 decision to Jesse Boggis. In the only match to go three sets, the No. 3 contest went to Allesandra DiOrio, who took a 7-5, 5-7, 10-7 win.
MIT will play at the NEWITT Tournament that will be hosted by Amherst College on October 14-16 before moving on to play in the NEWMAC Tournament that will be hosted by Babson College on October 22-23.
