Women’s Tennis Opens Spring Season With 8-1 Win Over Colby

Junior Julia Hsu

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – It was a strong start to the spring season for the MIT women's tennis team today as the Engineers scored an 8-1 win over Colby College. MIT started with three wins in doubles play that was the springboard to the victory.

MIT (8-3), ranked 22nd in the latest national poll, picked up 8-0 and 8-2 wins at Nos. 3 and 2 doubles to capture the early advantage.  At No. 1 doubles the MIT team of sophomores Lauren Quisenberry (Corpus Christie, Texas) and Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn.) completed the sweep against the duo of Kathryn Vergeyle and Sarah Wiener in a close match, 8-5.

Senior Anastasia Vishnevetsky (Orange, Conn.) was impressive in singles play, taking a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles. Quisenberry and freshman Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) were nearly as strong, dropping just one game in their wins at the Nos. 1 and 4 positions to give the Engineers enough points to clinch the win.

Also picking up singles victories for MIT were Hsu, who scored a 7-5, 6-2 win over Sally Holmes at No. 3, and freshman Vynnie Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) who took a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Victoria Abel at No. 5.

MIT will be on the road for the first time this spring in its next action, traveling to Bates College for an 11:00 a.m. match on Saturday, March 17.
