WELLESLEY, Mass. – MIT closed out its weekend of play at the Nor'Easter Bowl on a high note, taking its final match in the event against a squad from the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez by a final of 6-3. After taking two of the three doubles matches the Engineers won the top three flights in singles play to clinch the victory.
In the doubles portion of the match, MIT (9-6) won the top two flights to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The No. 1 doubles team of senior Anastasia Vishnevetsky (Orange, Conn.) and freshman Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) won a close one over the pairing of Gabriela Rodriguez/Nicole Rosich, 8-6. At No. 2 it was sophomore Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn.) and freshman Vynnie Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) finishing their tournament undefeated at 3-0 with an 8-0 decision over Marah Colon/Andrea Rivera. MIT came close to making it a clean sweep in doubles, with the No. 3 team of senior Hillary Jenny (Green Bay, Wis.) and freshman Madeline Aby (Lake Forest, Ill.) dropping a close, 8-6, decision to Christine Raymond/Joanna Ortiz.
Dutt and Hsu were impressive at the top of the singles competition. Playing at No. 1 and No. 2, each won their matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores to put the MIT within one point of taking the match. Kong provided that point at No. 3, defeating Rivera, 6-2, 6-1. Abby provided icing on the win by coming after from dropping the first set in her No. 5 match against Ortiz to take a 2-6, 7-5, 10-7 victory.
MIT will celebrate Senior Day in its next match, with the Engineers taking the court again on Saturday, April 14 against Simmons College. Play is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
