MIT Opens NEWMAC Play With 9-0 Win at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – After  tuning  up for the start of conference play last week with a 9-0 win, the MIT women's tennis team had the same result today as it opened New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play with a 9-0 win at Springfield College. Junior Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn.) picked up the match-clinching win for No. 30 MIT with a victory in her singles match.

It was a common theme in doubles play for MIT (2-0, 1-0 NEWMAC), with all of the matches decided by an 8-2 score. The first point of the day was delivered by the team of junior Lauren Quisenberry (Corpus Christi, Texas) and freshman Victoria Tam (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) with their 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles.

Cruising into singles play with a 3-0 advantage, sophomore Vynnie Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) took the first decision in singles play, coming up with a 6-2 win in the first set of her No. 2 match against Jen Cleary before Cleary retired, giving the victory to Kong. Hsu then delivered the clinching win, taking a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Melanie Thulin in the No. 6 match.

Three other players scored victories in their singles matches without surrendering a game in one set. At No. 3 senior Candace Wu (Yorba Linda, Calif.) took a 6-0, 6-2 win, while Tam scored a win at No. 4 by the same score. Sophomore Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) also blanked her opponent in a set, taking a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5. Quisenberry surrendered just three games in her 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1.

MIT will step back out of conference play for its next match, as it makes the short trip over to Tufts University for a 4:00 p.m. matchup with the Jumbos on Sept. 20. Springfield (1-1, 0-1 NEWMAC) will host Western New England in its next match on Sept. 20 at 4:00 p.m.
