Engineers Fall to Skidmore, 6-3
WALTHAM, Mass. – Taking on a ranked opponent for a second straight day, the No. 21 MIT women's tennis team faced off against No. 20 Skidmore College in a semifinal match of the 2013 Nor'Easter Bowl hosted by Wellesley College. Trailing by one going into singles play the Engineers picked up wins in the top two singles flights, but Skidmore came out on top in the rest of the flights to pick up the 6-3 victory.
As they did in the opening round, the No. 1 doubles team for MIT (14-3), junior Lauren Quisenberry (Corpus Christi, Texas) and freshman Victoria Tam (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.), scored the doubles point for the Engineers with an 8-4 win over Lee Ford and Nataly Mendoza. The other two matches, however, went the Thoroughbreds way as they took both the Nos. 2 and 3 matches by 8-5 scores to take a 2-1 lead going into singles play.
In the No. 1 singles match Quisenberry and Mendoza squared off, with Quisenberry delivering a point for the Engineers with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Sophomore Vynnie Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) picked up her second win in as many days at the tournament in the No. 2 position, downing Ford by a 6-0, 7-6 (2) score.
Three singles matches, Nos. 4-6, went to three sets and was where the final outcome was determined. At No. 4 sophomore Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) took on Alex Smith, with Smith winning the first set, 6-4, and Dutt coming back to take a close, 7-6 (5) second set. Smith took the match in the third, taking a 6-2 decision to claim the point for Skidmore. In the No. 5 match freshman Meghana Vasireddy (Golden Valley, Minn.) bounced back from a first set loss to Robyn Baird, only to see Barid come back to claim the 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 win. Junior Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn.) took her first set in the No. 6 match by a 6-4 score over Caroline Hobbs, but Hobbs bounced back to take the final two sets by 6-1, 6-3 scores to claim the win.
MIT will play for third-place in the tournament tomorrow when it takes on Trinity (Conn.) at 10:00 a.m. at the Dana Hall School in Wellesley.
