Women’s Tennis Defeats Springfield
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Playing conference matches on back-to-back days, the MIT women's tennis team completed a weekend sweep of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference contests with a 9-0 win over Springfield College this afternoon. Senior Lauren Quisenberry (Corpus Christi, Texas) clinched the victory for the Engineers with a straight sets win in her No. 1 singles match.
With MIT (3-0, 3-0 NEWMAC) leading 4-0 in the match, Quisenberry delivered the deciding point in her No. 1 match against freshman Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y.), taking a decisive 6-0, 6-0 win. Freshman Elysa Kohrs (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) picked up the first point in singles play for the Engineers, also taking a similar 6-0, 6-0 decision against senior Sydney Streimer (Mystic, Conn.) in the No. 2 match.
MIT swept through the doubles matches to take the early 3-0 advantage. The Engineers No. 1 team of Quisenberry and senior Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn.) as well as the No. 3 team of Junior Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) and freshman Krystal Lai (Irvine, Calif.) both scored 8-0 wins for a quick two points. Springfield (1-3, 0-3 NEWMAC) challenged in the No. 2 match, but the MIT duo of sophomore Victoria Tam (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) and Kohrs prevailed 8-3.
Lai and sophomore Sunnie Lampl (Bluemont, Va.) also scored 6-0, 6-0 wins for the Engineers in the Nos. 3 and 5 matches. MIT went on to complete the sweep as freshman Wendi Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) won 6-2, 6-0 over sophomore Ariana Shemms (Goshen, Conn.) at No. 4 and sophomore Alana Peters (Kenilworth, Ill.) took a 6-1, 6-2 decision against freshman Kelsey Whelpley (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) at No. 6.
MIT will be back in NEWMAC action next Saturday when the Engineers travel to Mount Holyoke College for a 1:00 p.m. match. Springfield will play again on Sept. 19 when it hosts Western New England University at 3:30 p.m.
