BOSTON, Mass. – After a successful outing at the 2013 USTA/ITA New England Regional Championships, the MIT women's tennis team swept the weekly New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) awards the league announced today. Senior Lauren Quisenberry (Corpus Christi, Texas) was named the singles Player of the Week, while junior Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) and freshman Krystal Lai (Irvine, Calif.) earned Doubles Team of the Week honors.
Quisenberry, who was seeded No. 4 in the singles bracket, reached the Round of 16 for the second straight year at the prestigious tournament by winning a pair of matches. In the first round she defeated Senzo Mavune-Maphisa from Trinity College, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6). She then moved on to play Lindsay Benoit from Nichols College, advancing to the Round of 16 with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Quisenberry's weekend came to an end there, however, as she fell to Linda Shin from host Williams College, 6-1, 6-0.
Dutt and Lai had an outstanding weekend, defeating two duos that play No. 1 doubles for their teams to advance to the quarterfinals. It was a tough match in their opening round against Wesleyan's Durbin and Grace Smith, but the Engineers' team prevailed in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-5). They then moved on to the quarterfinals with an 8-6 decision over Shelci Bowman and Sam Gann from Tufts, the No. 5 seed in the tournament. In the quarterfinals they fell to the team of Linda Shin and Alex Stone from Williams, 8-3.
