Head Coach Carol Matsuzaki Sets New Standard for Career Wins

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With a 7-2 victory over Bates College on Saturday, Carol Matsuzaki became the all-time winningest coach in the history of the MIT women’s tennis program. In her 11th season at the helm, the win raised her career total to 128, surpassing the standard set by Candace Royer following the conclusion of her 14-year tenure. The decision lifted the nationally-ranked No. 25 Engineers’ record to 9-3 on the year while the Bobcats’ ledger dipped to 1-2.

Leslie Hansen and Anastasia Vishnevetsky collaborated for an 8-1 win over Bates’ Caryn Benisch and Alex Piacquad in the top doubles spot. The Engineers extended their lead when Anisa McCree and Melissa Diskin defeated Jean Culliver and Meg Anderson, 8-2, in the No. 3 slot. Brooke Morse-Karzen and Erika Blauth put the Bobcats on the board with an 8-4 decision over Karina Pikhart and Yi Wang.

Morse-Karzen denied MIT a singles sweep as she outlasted Diskin, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4, in the No. 4 spot. Hansen picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Benisch in the No. 1 position as Vishnevetsky followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Piacquad. Wang defeated Anderson, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 3 slot while McCree topped Blauth, 6-3, 6-2. Pikhart wrapped up the action with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Gulliver in the No. 6 spot.

In exhibition play, Jen Rees and Alex Hall posted an 8-2 doubles victory for the Engineers. Bates’ Sangita Murali edged out Kerry Weinberg for a 9-7 win as Jenny Dohlman notched an 8-4 decision over Charlotte Matlack.

Next up for Bates will be a home match with Mount Holyoke College on Saturday, March 7. MIT will return to action on Saturday, March 14 when it hosts Colby College.
