MIT Surges Past Springfield, 7-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - MIT captured its fourth consecutive NEWMAC win following a 7-2 decision over Springfield College on Saturday. The victory lifted the Engineers' ledger to 4-1 on the year and 4-0 in conference play as they maintained a tie with Wellesley College for the top spot in the standings.

Tech dominated doubles play with a sweep, which also included an exhibition win. Joanna MacKay and Leslie Hansen led the way with an 8-2 decision in the No. 1 spot while Karina Pikhart and Anisa McCree posted an 8-3 victory in the No. 3 slot. Mariah Hoover and Yi Wang wrapped up the first portion of the match with an 8-5 win.

Hansen and Emily Chen recorded straight-set decisions for MIT. Hansen defeated Meghan Kelly, 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 1 slot while Chen notched a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the No. 6 position. After dropping the first set of her No. 2 match, 6-3, Hoover battled back with wins of 7-5 and 10-5. McCree lost the opening frame, 6-4, of her No. 4 match, but she bounced back with a pair of 6-3 wins. In the No. 3 position, Wang fell to Melissa Weinstein, 6-3, 6-4, while MacKay was defeated, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (2).

In exhibition play, Katie Smyth and Kerry Weinberg collaborated for an 8-3 doubles victory. Pikhart picked up a win over Janice Exley while Jackie Rogoff outlasted Beth Slotnick, 6-3, 7-5. Smyth shutout her opponent in the final match of the day.
