CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - MIT opened its season with a 7-2 victory over NEWMAC foe Smith College on Saturday. The Engineers' (1-0, 1-0 NEWMAC) No. 2 doubles team of Joanna MacKay and Jaclyn Cichon had the most exciting match of the day, defeating Ruth Linz and Shelly Kattan, 9-8 (7). Also in doubles action, Mariah Hoover and Jill Konowich earned an 8-2 win over Macailagh Herman and Jane Nylund in the No.3 spot. The top doubles team of rookie Jusleen Karve and Elaine Ni fell to Lauren Kemp and Talia Williams, 8-1.
Tech dominated the singles matches, only faltering at the No.2 position. Rookie Serena Lin rebounded from a loss in the first set, taking a 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 1 spot. Elaine Ni defeated Talia Williams, 6-3, 6-4 while Emily Chen earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Shelly Kattan. Jill Konowich picked up a win in the No. 5 slot, defeating Whitney Brown, 6-0, 6-3. In the first singles match of her collegiate career, Jusleen Karve defeated Jane Nylund, 6-2, 6-3.
The next match for MIT will be Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 4:00 p.m. when it hosts Wellesley College in NEWMAC play.
