MIT Defeats Wheaton, 6-3

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - In a match that took nearly five hours to complete, MIT came out with a 6-3 victory over NEWMAC foe Wheaton College on Tuesday. The Engineers improve to 2-1 overall and in conference play.
In doubles action, Tech claimed two of the three doubles points. Elaine Ni and Jusleen Karve lost in the No.1 position, 8-3. Jaclyn Cichon and Joanna McKay had the most exciting doubles match of the day, as they found themselves down, 2-5, but came back with six consecutive wins to take the set, 8-5. Mariah Hoover and Serena Lin picked up an 8-3 victory in the No. 3 spot.
The singles matches were very close, as three of them went into third sets. Elaine Ni (No. 3), Jill Konowich (No. 5), and Mariah Hoover (No. 6) each won their first set, dropped the second, but came back and seized the momentum to win their third sets. The final scores were: Elaine Ni, 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (5); Jill Konowich, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1; and Mariah Hoover, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3. Emily Chen added another singles victory for MIT by defeating Brianna Jackson, 6-4, 6-1. In the No. 1 slot, Serena Lin fell to Ashley Kriwinsky, 6-3, 6-1. Jaclyn Cichon lost to Jamie Weiss, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 2 position.
The next match for MIT will be on Thursday, Sept. 30 when it travels to Tufts University.
