Women's Tennis Drops Smith, 8-1

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – MIT women’s tennis rebounded from a tough mid-week loss with a convincing victory over NEWMAC rival Smith College. Sweeping the singles matches and taking two of the three doubles contests, the Engineers improved to 6-2 on the year with an 8-1 win on the road.

Leslie Hansen dominated the competition en route to shutout victories in both singles and doubles. Anastasia Vishnevetsky, who teamed with Hansen for an 8-0 win at the No. 1 doubles spot, was nearly as dominant in securing a victory at No. 2 singles. The Engineers won every singles match in straight sets while enduring their only setback of the day in No. 2 doubles. Gianna Teague and Jaimi Inskeep prevented MIT from securing a complete sweep as the Smith duo upended Anisa McCree and Melissa Diskin at the No. 2 doubles position.

In exhibition action, Alex Hall and Jen Rees topped Nicole Anderson and Margaret Steiner, 8-4, while Kerry Weinberg and Jenny Dohlman picked up an 8-3 win. Karina Pikhart defeated Steiner, 6-0, 6-1, as Rees registered a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Weinberg did not drop a game to her opponent (6-0, 6-0) while Dohlman defeated Jessica Kaplan, 8-3, Kaplan bounced back with an 8-1 win over Emily Onufer.
