CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its regional award winners with head coach Carol Matsuzaki and senior Thomas Dohlman earning accolades. Matsuzaki was named the Division III Northeast Region Wilson/ITA Women's Coach of the Year while Dohlman was the Division III Northeast recipient of the ITA/Arthur Ashe, Jr. Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship.
The selections made Institute history as it was the first time both tennis programs collected major awards from the ITA during the same season. On the women's side, Matsuzaki garnered the first regional coaching honor since Candace Royer was named the Division III Coach of the Year in 1984-85. Dohlman is the second athlete at MIT to be named an Arthur Ashe Award winner after Mealani Nakamura was chosen in 1999-00 from the women's team.
Both Matsuzaki and Dohlman will wrap up their seasons this weekend at the NCAA Division III Individual Championships. Matsuzaki will travel with MIT's No. 1 singles player Leslie Hansen to Fredericksburg, Va., while Dohlman will make the trip to St. Louis, Mo. with head coach Dave Hagymas.
