CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT sophomore Alina Gatowski was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, on Monday for her efforts at the Washington & Lee Spring Carnival over the weekend. Gatowski had one of five NCAA Provisional qualifying marks for the Engineers at the meet, which was part of the team’s annual spring break trip.
Gatowski bested the field in the 10k, finishing with a provisional qualifying time of 36:11.12, over 22 seconds faster than her nearest competitor. The junior also broke the MIT record by over six seconds in the process and currently has the fourth best time in the nation in that event.
Other NCAA qualifiers over the weekend included Tania Morimoto, in the same event, Portia Jones (100m hurdles), Jamie Simmons (400m hurdles) and the 4x400-meter relay team.
MIT will be back in action on Saturday, April 3, traveling to RPI for the Engineer’s Cup meet between the Cardinal and Gray, the host squad, and WPI.
