CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After an outstanding individual effort over the weekend that included four event wins, Portia Jones was named the Women's Track Athlete of the Week by the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Jones was one of eight different Tech women to earn multiple top-five finishes, as MIT defeated Bates and Colby College in a tri-meet on Saturday afternoon.
Jones placed first in all four events in which she was entered while earning a pair of NCAA provisional qualifying marks and breaking one of her own program records. Jones was a winner in the 100m (12.36 seconds), 100-meter hurdles (14.98) and 200m (24.72). She also teamed up with Jacqueline Brew, Martha Gross and Jamie Simmons to win the 4x100 meter relay. Jones' times in the 100 hurdles and 200 were good enough to reach the NCAA provisional standard and she was able to break the MIT record once again in the 100-meter dash.
Next weekend, MIT will host its Spring Invitational at the Steinbrenner Track. The meet begins on Saturday, April 16 at 11:00 a.m. and will feature some of the top squads in New England.
