BOSTON, Mass. - After two days of competition at the New England Championships, the No. 4 MIT women's indoor track and field team ended the weekend in 13th place out of the 34 teams present with 25.5 points. Last year, the Engineers finished in 10th place with half a point less than this year.

Freshman Maryann Gong (Livermore, Calif.) was the lone MIT student-athlete to win an individual event, crossing the line in the 3000m with a time of 9:42.48. She crushed the MIT varsity record by six seconds and her own freshman record by over 10 seconds.

Running in the semi-finals of the 60m Hurdles, which she qualified for the day before, was senior Jackie Brew (Amherst, N.H.), who came 15th with a 9.25. In the final event of the day, the Shot Put, sophomore Isabella Stuopis (Amherst, N.H.) threw a 43-07.00 to take fifth.

In the Triple Jump, senior Stephanie Birkhimer (Oneonta, N.Y.) jumped a 35-10.50 to take 17th, while junior Michelle Johnson (Glendora, Calif.) was not far behind, coming in 20th with a 35-05.00.

Tech will next compete at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships, which will take place at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston on Friday and Saturday, March 7 and 8. Another group of Engineers will return to Tufts University on March 8 for the Last Chance Qualifier in hopes of improving on their performances before the NCAA Division III Championships in less than two weeks.
