BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Cimran Virdi (Walnut Creek, Calif.) was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Athlete of the Week on Monday afternoon after a record-breaking weekend at RPI. This is the first time in her career that she has received a conference weekly award. She was also honored by the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) by being named the women's track and field Athlete of the Week.
Tech traveled to New York on Saturday for the Engineer's Cup, finishing in first with 184 points. WPI was second with 110 and host RPI was not far behind with 98. Throughout the day, the Engineers won a total of 12 events. For the second weekend in a row, Virdi won the Pole Vault, improving on her performance from the Westmont Collegiate Classic by over a foot and clearing the bar with a 13-03.50. Her vault broke the MIT varsity record of 13-03.0 from the 2011 season and puts her first in the country.
MIT will travel to Maine next Saturday, April 12 to face Bates College, Colby College and the University of Southern Maine for a meet starting at 12:00 p.m.
