MIT Gets Season on Track at Northeastern Invitational
Jan. 18, 2005
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT women's indoor track and field team opened its season at the Northeastern University Invitational held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston this past weekend. Besides the opportunity to run on one of the fastest tracks in the world, (and the only meet on a banked oval for the runners this season), the invitational format provided an experience quite apart from the team's focus on scoring dual, tri, and quad meets. The fields were very large and opening heights were set to whittle fields down quickly. TheEngineers turned in a number of Personal Bests and Top-10 All-Time performances.
Merry Silberstein finished 54th out of 102 runners in the 200 with a time of 28.70. She then placed 15th in the long jump with a distance of 15' 8.75". Christine Fanchiang also had a strong showing in the long jump with a leap of 15' 11" to rank 13th out of 32. Also competing in a field of 32, Leanne Veldhuis took 12th place in the 500 with a time of 1:22.98. Caroline Gorman finished the mile in 5:35.57 for 15th out of 41. In the 3,000, Karen Condon took 11th place (11:20.94) while Nancy Benedetti was 16th (11:31.18).
