Historic Run Powers MIT at NCAA Track and Field Championships

May 26, 2007

OSHKOSH, Wis. - Freshman Amy Magnuson secured the highest individual finish ever for the MIT women's track and field program at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a blistering performance in the 100-meter hurdles that nearly netted a Gold medal at Titan Stadium, last weekend. Magnuson finished second overall in the event, while leading MIT's largest national contingent since 2003.

The Engineers finished 34th overall in the team standings, although Magnuson's tremendous effort in the hurdles supplied all the power. The dynamic rookie finished second in her preliminary heat before challenging for an individual national title and J.J. Keller Field record in the finals. Magnuson crossed the line in 14.64, off her school-record pace but comfortably ahead of third-place finisher, Aislinn Sowash of Haverford College.

MIT was also represented in two of the throwing events as Aline Thomas and Chi-Fong Wang combined to give MIT three athletes at NCAAs for just the second time ever. In 2003, Julia Espel, Martha Buckley and Cat Tweedie qualified for the national championships, while Espel copped the Institute's second All-America honor after a seventh-place finish in the steeplechase. Tweedie was the last MIT athlete to qualify for NCAAs after making another appearance in 2004.

Magnuson's runner-up effort in the hurdles secured MIT's third All-America honor at the outdoor championship. Alyssa Thorvaldsen enjoyed the program's previous best performance after finishing sixth in the 400 hurdles at the 2000 edition of college's premier outdoor event.
