Women's Volleyball Places Second at Wildcat Fall Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With a 3-1 ledger, the MIT women's volleyball team finished second at the Johnson & Wales University Wildcat Fall Classic this past weekend. The Engineers (16-5) swept UMass Dartmouth (25-12, 25-22, 25-23) and City College of New York (25-12, 25-14, 25-2) on Friday. The next day, Tech fell to Plymouth State University (15-25, 25-22, 29-27, 25-17) but bounced back with a 25-14, 25-15, 25-17 win over Western Connecticut State University. Junior libero Katie Spielbauer (Lakeview, Mich.) represented the Cardinal and Gray on the All-Tournament Team.

Sophomore Kristine Bunker (Falmouth, Mass.) paced MIT's balanced attack with seven kills to go along with two blocks versus UMass Dartmouth. Freshman Kaitlin Ahlers (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added six kills, a .417 hitting percentage, and four digs while Spielbauer registered seven dig and three aces. Freshman Jody Fu (San Francisco, Calif.) posted six digs and two aces as sophomores Sharon Hao (San Jose. Calif.) and Tatiana Berger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) both notched four digs. Junior Alyssa Rothman (Plainview, N.Y.) dished out 11 assists while freshman Nicole Gagnier (Atlanta, Ga.) tallied nine assists, four digs, and three aces. Freshman Jenny Astrachan (Austin, Texas) rounded out the setters with eight assists and four digs.

Freshman Morgan Stewart (Powell, Ohio) powered the Engineers with eight kills, a .583 hitting percentage, and three blocks against CCNY. Junior Trinity Leonard (Mill Valley, Calif.) compiled four kills, three aces, and three digs while Bunker chipped in four kills. Fu and freshman Sarah Oberhelman (New Orleans, La.) both earned four aces as Fu contributed a team-high six digs. Sophomore Rachel Hunt (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and freshman Kayla Harris (Baton Rouge, La.) recorded three blocks apiece while Ahlers finished with two. Sophomore Jess Fessler (Shortsville, N.Y.) collected five digs while Spielbauer had four of her own. Gagnier paced the setting corps with nine assists, followed by Hao (six), Astrachan (five), and Rothman (four).

Senior Cecily Joujon-Roche (Laguna Hills, Calif.) racked up 13 kills, a .435 hitting percentage, and two blocks in the loss to Plymouth State. Berger recorded 12 kills and eight digs while senior Kelly Schulte (Riverside, Calif.) totaled 11 kills. Senior Natasha Jensen (Columbia, Md.) amassed 17 digs, five kills, and three aces as Hunt tacked on five kills. Spielbauer collected 12 digs while Fu earned two aces. Gagnier registered 45 assists, four blocks, and three aces.

In the sweep of Western Connecticut, Schulte led the way with 11 kills to go along with two blocks while Joujon-Roche tallied seven kills, a .389 hitting percentage, six digs, five blocks, and two aces. Berger posted six digs and two blocks as Gagnier compiled 24 assists, six digs, and two blocks. Spielbauer totaled 16 digs and two aces while Fessler added 10 digs and two aces.
