NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The MIT women's volleyball team fell to Amherst College (20-25, 25-12, 25-14, 25-27) and Middlebury College (25-23, 34-32, 25-22) but defeated Bridgewater State University (25-7, 25-12, 25-17) at the Hall of Fame Tournament held this past weekend. Senior Cecily Joujon-Roche (Laguna Hills, Calif.) represented the Engineers (21-9) on the All-Tournament Team.
In its opener with Amherst, Joujon-Roche, junior Trinity Leonard (Mill Valley, Calif.), and sophomore Rachel Hunt (Arlington Heights, Ill.) each posted eight kills. Leonard tacked on five blocks, followed by four from Joujon-Roche, and two by Hunt. Senior Kelly Schulte (Riverside, Calif.) bolstered the front row with five kills while sophomore Jess Fessler (Shortsville, N.Y.) earned three aces. Junior Katie Spielbauer (Lakeview, Mich.) collected 18 digs as senior Natasha Jensen (Columbia, Md.) totaled nine of her own. Sophomore Tatiana Berger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) contributed six digs and three blocks while freshman Nicole Gagnier (Atlanta, Ga.) notched 33 assists and six digs.
Against Middlebury, Leonard amassed 13 kills, 15 digs, and two blocks as Schulte recorded 11 kills and four blocks. Hunt chipped in eight kills and two blocks while sophomore Kristine Bunker (Falmouth, Mass.) added six kills and five blocks. Joujon-Roche had five kills, three blocks, and three aces as Spielbauer racked up eight digs. Fessler registered five digs and two aces while junior Alyssa Rothman (Plainview, N.Y.) and Gagnier dished out 27 and 10 assists, respectively.
In the finale with Bridgewater State, Berger posted seven kills and three aces while freshman Morgan Stewart (Powell, Ohio) totaled seven kills and two blocks. Freshman Kaitlin Ahlers (Colorado Springs, Colo.) contributed six kills as fellow classmate Kayla Harris (Baton Rouge, La.) added four kills and three blocks. Gagnier distributed eight assists in the first set while freshman Jenny Astrachan (Austin, Texas) finished out the match with 21 assists and three blocks. Freshman Jody Fu (San Francisco, Calif.) paced the defense with six digs as Spielbauer and sophomore Sharon Hao (San Jose, Calif.) both had five digs and two aces. Jensen chipped in four digs and three aces while Berger rounded out the squad with three aces.
