Women's Volleyball Crowned MIT Quad Tournament Champions

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the sixth time in tournament history and first time since 2010 the MIT women's volleyball team won the MIT Quad Tournament on Saturday. The Engineers took top honors with a 3-0 ledger, followed by Bridgewater College (Va.), Western New England University, and Rivier College. Senior Alyssa Rothman (Plainview, N.Y.) was named Tournament MVP while junior Tatiana Berger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

MIT (23-3) opened the tournament by defeating Bridgewater, 25-23, 25-23, 25-17, on Friday night. Senior Trinity Leonard (Mill Valley, Calif.) tallied 13 kills, 10 digs, and two aces as junior Kristine Bunker (Falmouth, Mass.) posted 11 kills, a .500 hitting performance, and three aces. Berger notched eight kills and a .538 hitting percentage while freshman Ada Taylor (Durham, N.C.) totaled eight kills, a .462 hitting effort, and a solo block. Senior Katie Spielbauer (Lakeview, Mich.) registered 16 digs and four aces as junior Sharon Hao (San Jose, Calif.) added 10 digs and two aces. Rothman racked up 35 assists, nine digs, and three aces while freshman Lindsey Wang (Cupertino, Calif.) chipped in six digs.

On Saturday morning, the Engineers battled Western New England for a 22-25, 25-17, 25-16, 18-25, 15-6 victory. Leonard led the way with 13 kills, a .480 hitting performance, and seven digs as Berger compiled 13 kills and a .542 hitting percentage. Taylor recorded seven kills and three blocks, followed by six kills and two blocks from junior Rachel Hunt (Arlington Heights, Ill.). Bunker connected on five of her six hitting attempts and tacked on three blocks as freshman Meryl Gibbs (Bellaire, Texas) rounded out the attack with six kills. Spielbauer collected 17 digs and four aces while Wang generated 11 digs and four aces. Rothman finished the match with 45 assists and 14 digs.

The Cardinal and Gray blanked Rivier, 25-18, 25-21, 25-19, in the finale Saturday afternoon. Taylor posted 10 kills on 12 errorless hitting attempts for a .833 hitting performance while Bunker had eight kills, a .500 hitting percentage, four blocks, and two aces. The solid attacking efforts continued with Hunt (nine kills, .438 hitting percentage) and Berger (seven kills, .545 hitting percentage) as sophomore Jenny Astrachan (Austin, Texas) contributed five kills and two blocks to the front row. Spielbauer anchored the defense with 11 digs to go along with two aces while Wang tallied nine digs and two aces. Rothman dished out 37 assists as Hao added five digs.

Next up for MIT will be a trip to NEWMAC rival Babson College on Tuesday, Oct. 16.
