SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The MIT women's volleyball team closed out the regular season by defeating Mount Holyoke College, 25-19, 25-18, 25-8, on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Engineers (27-5, 7-2 NEWMAC) secured the No. 3 seed in the NEWMAC Championship Tournament and will host No. 6 Babson College in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday, Oct. 30.
Junior Kristine Bunker (Falmouth, Mass.) paced MIT with 13 kills and a .800 hitting percentage to go along with three blocks and an ace. Freshman Ada Taylor (Durham, N.C.) posted five kills and three blocks while sophomore Morgan Stewart (Powell, Ohio) and freshman Meryl Gibbs (Bellaire, Texas) both contributed four kills. Senior Katie Spielbauer (Lakeview, Mich.) collected 17 digs and two aces as junior Sharon Hao (San Jose, Calif.) tallied 11 digs and six aces. Senior Trinity Leonard (Mill Valley, Calif.) bolstered the defense with seven digs. Senior Alyssa Rothman (Plainview, N.Y.) registered 21 assists and four blocks as sophomore Nicole Gagnier (Atlanta, Ga.) dished out eight assists in the third set.
