CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In the program's 15th NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2007, the MIT women's volleyball team will take on local foe UMass Boston on Friday, Nov. 9 at 5:30 p.m. at Connecticut College. The meeting will be the first between both squads in post-season action and seventh overall since the series began in 1975. In addition to the host Camels, the rest of the regional bracket features Springfield College, Bowdoin College, Emerson College, Roger Williams University, and Framingham State University.
MIT (30-5) returns to the national scene after battling with a trio of formidable foes in the NEWMAC Championship tournament. The No. 3 Engineers kicked off their run by defeating No. 6 Babson College, 25-15, 25-16, 23-25, 26-24, in the quarterfinal round and then fighting off No. 2 Springfield College, 29-27, 25-21, 18-25, 25-21 in semifinal action. MIT capped off the weekend by sweeping host and top seed Wellesley College, 25-17, 26-24, 25-15, to capture the crown.
UMass Boston (17-11) secured its fourth straight Little East Conference title following a 25-23, 25-16, 25-12 semifinal win over Rhode Island College and a 25-16, 25-9, 22-25, 25-16 victory over Keene State College in the championship match.
The Engineers recorded three straight trips to the NCAA Tournament from 2005-07 with their last two outings ending in the Sweet 16. The Beacons reached the second round in 2009, advanced to the national quarterfinals the following year, and were regional finalists in 2011.
