WESTON, Mass. – In its third appearance at the Regis College Pride Invitational, the MIT women's volleyball team came away with its third straight title on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers (4-0) opened the weekend with a five-set thriller against Rivier University (25-23, 18-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-13) and then fought off host Regis, 25-20, 25-20, 13-25, 25-17. On Saturday, MIT swept through the competition as it defeated Eastern Nazarene College (25-15, 25-9, 25-12) and Mount Ida College (25-5, 25-7, 25-21). Like last year, senior Tatiana Berger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was named the tournament MVP while classmate Kristine Bunker (Falmouth, Mass.) once again earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
Berger powered the Engineers with 16 kills and 10 digs versus Rivier as freshman Megan Gebhard (Howell, Mich.) notched 15 kills in her intercollegiate debut. Bunker produced eight kills and three blocks as senior Rachel Hunt (Arlington Heights, Ill.) chipped in seven kills. Freshman Tori Wuthrich (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) compiled 15 digs, followed by junior Angela Ha (Houston, Texas) with seven and senior Emma Gargus (Columbus, Ohio) with six. Junior Nicole Gagnier (Atlanta, Ga.) rounded out the squad with 40 assists and six digs.
Against the Pride, Berger recoded seven kills and a .583 hitting percentage while Gargus connected on five of her six hitting attempts. Bunker notched seven kills and three blocks as junior Jenny Astrachan (Austin, Texas) amassed seven aces and seven digs. Wuthrich racked up 17 digs and two aces while freshman Lauren Uhr (Honolulu, Hawaii) tacked on two aces. Gagnier totaled 28 assists in the victory.
In Saturday's opener with Eastern Nazarene, Bunker posted 11 kills and a .444 hitting performance while Berger tallied eight kills, four digs, and two aces. Adding to the balanced attack was Gebhard with six kills, five by freshman Jennie Glerum (Redmond, Wash.) and four courtesy of junior Morgan Stewart (Powell, Ohio). Wuthrich led the way with 16 digs and earned three aces while Ha bolstered the back row with 11 digs. Gagnier and freshman Paige Studer (Huntington Beach, Calif.) shared setting duties, distributing 19 and 17 assists, respectively, as Astrachan chipped in two aces.
Glerum and Uhr both had five aces while Glerum added four digs in the finale with Mount Ida. Wurthrich paced MIT with 10 digs, followed by Astrachan (six) and Ha (five). Gebhard, Bunker, and Stewart each registered five kills as Gagnier and Studer posted 14 and eight assists, respectively.
Next up for the Engineers is the Vassar College Invitational on September 6-7 where they will face SUNY Cortland, the host Brewers, Stevens Institute of Technology, and NYU.
