CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With a 3-1 ledger, the MIT women's volleyball team claimed fourth place at the annual MIT Women's Volleyball Invitational on Saturday. The Engineers (8-4) fell to Endicott College, 28-26, 25-19, 25-19, in the opener but went on to sweep Bates College (25-16, 25-10, 25-13), Colby College (25-16, 25-18, 25-12), and Tufts University (25-21, 25-15, 25-17). Senior Kristine Bunker (Falmouth, Mass.) represented the Cardinal and Gray on the All-Tournament Team.
Senior Tatiana Berger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) tallied 13 kills, 11 digs, and three blocks against Endicott while Bunker posted nine kills and six blocks. Freshman Megan Gebhard (Howell, Mich.) tacked on eight kills as senior Rachel Hunt (Arlington Heights, Ill.) added four kills. Junior Nicole Gagnier (Atlanta, Ga.) dished out 33 assists while freshman Tori Wuthrich (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) collected 14 digs, followed by nine from senior Jess Fessler (Shortsville, N.Y.) and six by freshman Lauren Uhr (Honolulu, Hawaii).
Gebhard notched 12 kills and eight digs versus Bates as Bunker registered nine kills and a .471 hitting performance. Berger totaled 12 digs, nine kills, a .429 hitting effort, and two aces while Hunt rounded out the attack with five kills. Freshman Jennie Glerum (Redmond, Wash.) recorded 10 digs and three aces as Wuthrich finished with eight digs and three aces. Senior Emma Gargus (Columbus, Ohio) paced MIT with three blocks while junior Jenny Astrachan (Austin, Texas) contributed two aces. Gagnier generated 32 assists and eight digs in the victory.
On Saturday, Berger powered the Engineers with 10 kills on 19 attempts and added nine digs against Colby. Gebhard registered 10 digs and nine kills as Bunker notched six kills and three blocks. Hunt had 10 kills and a .444 hitting performance while Gagnier distributed 40 assists. Glerum led the way with eight digs and four aces as Wuthrich produced seven digs and three aces.
In the finale with Tufts, Gagnier racked up 40 assists, seven digs, and six kills on eight attempts. Bunker was a force to be reckoned with at the net as she posted 13 kills, a .647 hitting percentage, and two blocks. Berger totaled 13 kills and six digs while Gebhard finished with nine digs, eight kills, and two blocks. Glerum earned six aces to go along with 10 digs as Wuthrich compiled a team-high 12 digs. Gargus bolstered MIT's strong serving with two aces.
MIT kicks off NEWMAC play on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at WPI with the first serve slated for 7:00 p.m.
