Engineers Split Volleyball Tri-Match with Simmons and Bowdoin

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT defeated Simmons College, 25-20, 25-11, 16-25, 25-14, but fell to Bowdoin College, 20-25, 25-23, 25-13, 26-28, 15-13, in a non-conference women's volleyball tri-match on Saturday. In the neutral site pairing, Bowdoin came from behind in the third set to sweep Simmons, 25-11, 25-14, 25-18.

Seniors Tatiana Berger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Kristine Bunker (Falmouth, Mass.) both posted 11 kills and three blocks while Berger added 10 digs for MIT (14-6). Senior Emma Gargus (Columbus, Ohio) recorded 10 kills and four aces as junior Jenny Astrachan (Austin, Texas) and senior Rachel Hunt (Arlington Heights, Ill.) added seven and six kills, respectively. Freshman Jennie Glerum (Redmond, Wash.) tallied nine digs and five aces as senior Sharon Hao (San Jose, Calif.) paced the Engineers with 11 digs. Freshman Tori Wuthrich (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) bolstered the defense with eight digs while junior Nicole Gagnier (Atlanta, Ga.) generated 43 assists and six digs.

Freshman Kat Guillotte (New Bedford, Mass.) amassed 16 digs, six kills, and two blocks for Simmons (4-18). Sophomore Nicole Alberghini (Northborough, Mass.) led the way with nine kills as freshman Abby Hart (Westfield, Mass.) notched five kills on eight attempts and four blocks. Freshman Alexandria Itasaka (Bradford, Mass.) collected 10 digs while classmate Morgan Kieon (North Attleboro, Mass.) totaled seven digs and two blocks. Freshman Andalyn Duke (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) rounded out the squad with 20 assists and seven digs.

Bowdoin College def. Simmons College, 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-18)
Freshman Katie Doherty (Menlo Park, Calif.) paced Bowdoin (14-4) with nine kills and seven digs as classmate Clare Geyer (Mill Valley, Calif.) produced eight kills, two aces, and two blocks. Sophomore Hailey Wahl (Agoura Hills, Calif.) compiled five kills, two aces, and two blocks while sophomore Christy Jewett (Sunnyvale, Calif.) finished with five kills and five digs. Senior Taylor Vail (Glendale, Calif.) and sophomore Audrey DeFusco (Cheshire, Conn.) both chipped in seven digs as senior Sophia Cornew (Portola Valley, Calif.) earned two aces. Freshman Quincy Leech (Durham, N.C.) closed out the contingent with 23 assists and six digs.

Chamberlin led the Sharks' balanced attack with five kills and tacked on two aces. Guillotte totalled 11 digs, followed by five from Itasaka. Duke finished the day with 10 assists and five digs.

Bowdoin College def. MIT, 3-2 (20-25, 25-23, 25-13, 26-28, 15-13)
Berger racked up 18 kills, 14 digs, and two aces as Astrachan registered 18 kills, a .341 hitting performance, and nine digs for MIT. Bunker added nine kills and two aces while Wuthrich generated 16 digs and three aces. Glerum collected 13 digs as Gagnier posted 51 assists and 10 digs.

Jewett recorded 14 kills, nine digs, and two aces while Doherty had 16 digs, six kills, and two blocks. Geyer finished with 10 kills, a .476 hitting effort, and three blocks as sophomore Emma Patterson (San Francisco, Calif.) paced Bowdoin with five blocks. Senior Ellie Brennan (Medway, Mass.) totaled nine kills and four blocks while junior Emese Gaal (Raleigh, N.C.) tacked on seven kills. Vail notched 12 digs and two aces as sophomore McKenzie Kessel (Colorado Springs, Colo.) contributed nine digs and two aces. Leech dished out 44 assists in the victory.

Next up for MIT will be a home match against NEWMAC rival Wellesley College on Tuesday, Oct. 8. Simmons will host Bridgewater State University in a non-conference tilt the same day while Bowdoin will take on NESCAC foe Connecticut College at home on Friday, Oct. 11.
