CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - No. 2 Williams College defeated No. 7 Eastern Connecticut State University, 30-24, 30-22, 30-13, in an NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball New England Regional match on Thursday. The Ephs (28-7) will face No. 3 Amherst College at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Warriors closed the season with a record of 11-27.
After trading points to open the match, a kill by Melissa Pun put Williams ahead for good. Eastern Connecticut stayed within striking distance, trailing 15-14. The Ephs slowly extended their margin to five points (23-18) and maintained the cushion throughout the rest of the game.
The second stanza was a back-and-forth affair, featuring six ties and three lead changes. The Warriors gradually established a three-point edge, which it held on five occasions, the last being at 15-12. Alisha Cahlan's strike touched off six unanswered points by Williams. Eastern Connecticut countered with a 4-1 run that evened the game at 19. A kill by Whitney Hitchcock powered the Ephs to 10 of the last 13 points.
In the final frame, each side exchanged points before Williams reclaimed the lead on a service error. The Ephs controlled play as they prevented the Warriors from posting back-to-back points during a 13-3 run. Eastern Connecticut could not overcome the deficit as Williams cruised to the victory.
Hitchcock recorded an efficient hitting performance for the Ephs, tallying 13 kills on 17 attempts with one error for a .706 percentage. Nicole Ballon-Landa notched a match-high 17 kills to go along with three blocks. Melissa Pun posted 11 digs, three aces, and three blocks while Chelsea Kubal led the way with 17 digs. Emily Avis registered a double-double on 38 assists and 10 digs.
Sandra Jaques paced a balanced attack with nine kills as Alexandra Silvestros added eight for Eastern Connecticut. Priscilla Dougherty amassed 17 assists and 13 digs while Lauren Odell contributed 14 digs and two aces.
